Anvil is a unique tetraploid hybrid ryegrass that blends winter and summer production traits in one genetic profile. Its very late heading genetics maintain pasture quality for silage production, finishing pastures and milk production through spring and early summer. Anvil also excels in summer and autumn growth and has exceptional disease tolerance. Anvil AR37 will be available in limited quantities in spring 2025.

Anvil is the first hybrid ryegrass in New Zealand to feature +30 very late heading genetics. This heading date is significantly later than most hybrids, positioning Anvil between Align tetraploid perennial ryegrass (+39 days) and Three60 diploid perennial ryegrass (+20 days). Compared with its predecessor, Ohau (+8 days), Anvil delivers a much later heading, extending the period of high-quality pasture production without compromising early spring growth.

Anvil sets a new benchmark for hybrid ryegrass, offering impressive yield and extended quality that carries production well into early summer. Its very late heading date (+30) helps farmers secure high-quality silage and finishing pastures into early December.

Anvil delivers reliability under pressure, making it a top choice for quality dairy pastures and an ideal option for undersowing. Superior resilience through summer and excellent rust tolerance sets it apart as a reliable performer in challenging conditions.

Rust tolerance

Rust tolerance is a key breeding trait Agricom values. Although rust strains evolve and environmental stresses can challenge grass genetics over time, Anvil has demonstrated exceptional resilience (refer to Table 1). Its ability to remain healthy through hot summer conditions is a testament to its strong disease tolerance and adaptability.

Performance Data

Anvil is an outstanding hybrid ryegrass, delivering exceptional productivity across all seasons. With impressive spring growth, a key driver of a farm’s total productivity, Anvil sets the foundation for high annual yields. Its strong winter performance matches the best hybrid genetics available, making it a valuable choice for year-round production. Where summer and autumn growth is possible, Anvil excels, demonstrating dominant performance and exceptional yield potential through these seasons.

Anvil is an exceptionally high yielding grass that provides quality feed on both sides of Christmas, delivering a consistently strong first-year yield.

Suggested Mixes

Dairy pasture
Anvil
is a rare combination of outstanding total production, cool season activity, and outright summer production. Along with the quality traits of being a tetraploid hybrid ryegrass and having a very late heading date, Anvil is a real candidate for medium-term pasture on a dairy platform.

Short-term finishing pasture
Anvil creates a very high quality young stock and beef finishing option when combined with Attribute white clover and Relish red clover. This is a productive pasture for all seasons that is highly suitable for silage production systems.

It is not advisable to mix AR37 and AR1 varieties. AR1 is not recommended for areas where black beetle, porina or root aphid are common problem pests. Grass seed should be Superstrike® treated where Argentine stem weevil, black beetle or grass grub are a risk to seedlings. For more information on AR37 endophyte, visit ar37endophyte.com. AR37 is only recommended for sheep, beef, and dairy.

Undersowing option
Anvil
, with AR37 endophyte, is ideal for extending the life of damaged pasture and for boosting total productivity without compromising pasture quality. Including Brace white clover supports legume content of damaged pastures helping maintain productivity and quality.
