Which multiple-grazing forage brassica should I use?

Hunter (Brassica rapa spp. campestris) is a hybrid cross between a turnip and a rape, producing one of the fastest maturing brassicas, with a style similar to a leafy, non-bulb producing turnip. Spitfire (Brassica napus) is a cross between a kale and a rape. Mainstar (Brassica napus) is a cross between kale and turnip. Both Mainstar and Spitfire are commonly termed forage rapes. These different genetic make-ups have resulted in very different characteristics. The following diagram summarises these characteristics and how they relate to their suitability for different farming systems.

Understanding your fertility status early on is critical. Learn more about soil structure and fertility here.
