Doubletake

DoubleTake is a triticale (wheat/ryecorn cross) capable of very high forage or silage production from autumn or early spring sowings. It has very good resistance to frost and disease and has rapid recovery after grazing.
DoubleTake will provide most benefit to a farm system when sown in the autumn (early March) and multi-grazed over the winter period. The winter production under this multi-graze management will be up to 40% greater than from an Italian ryegrass.
If the paddock has not been damaged during the winter, DoubleTake can be shut up for silage in the spring.

Alternatively, excellent production can be achieved by sowing between July and September for use as a whole crop silage from late November to January. DoubleTake has a prostrate growth habit which means that the growing points are lower and therefore the crop recovers well after grazing. Its slow development pattern also allows a greater optimum silage harvest window than barley.

Trials at Crop & Food Research sites have shown a significant increase in DM produced from multi-grazing DoubleTake over winter compared with other cereals and Italian ryegrass. Trials by AgResearch at Winchmore have confirmed very good liveweight gain over winter in cattle
